Deadline for CCU scholarships is Dec. 31

The cost of receiving a higher education increases each year. That's one reason Consumers Cooperative Association, the sponsor for Consumers Credit Union, created its scholarship program.

Every year, CCA offers area students the opportunity to earn one of six $1,500 scholarships. The deadline to apply for this year's scholarship opportunity is 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

The $1,500 scholarships are available for students scheduled to graduate high school in the spring of 2015. Applicants are evaluated based on academic performance, financial need and leadership abilities, in addition to their involvement in the local community.

"Scholarships are one of the ways we can support the continuing education of our high school students," said Elizabeth Oldham, Consumers Cooperative Association president. "We know today's students are tomorrow's leaders; therefore, we have both a responsibility and commitment to actively support higher education for our youth."

Applications are available at area high schools, online at www.myconsumers.org, and at all six CCU locations. Valid applications must include the student's official high school transcript through their junior year, a copy of their first semester grades from the current academic year and a nonreturnable photograph.

Students awarded scholarships will be featured in an upcoming issue of CCU's newsletter, The Reporter. Applicants or their parents or guardians must also be a member of CCU for a minimum of one year. Applications must be received by Dec. 31, 2014, to be considered.

"Consumers Credit Union is proud that our sponsor places so much emphasis on higher education," said Sean M. Rathjen, president of the member-owned credit union. "It is our belief that every student should have the opportunity to reach their individual potential. Consumers Cooperative Association supports that belief by generously investing in the education of local students and their pursuit of continued education at the college or university of their choice."
