St. Hubert students, faculty get 'Happy' over Blue Ribbon honor

The faculty and staff of St. Hubert Catholic School in Hoffman Estates surprised their students at an assembly last week with an impromptu flash mob dance to the popular song "Happy" to celebrate the school's recognition as a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School.

Students and faculty dressed in blue and wore sunglasses with the inscription "SHS 2014 National Blue Ribbon School" during the celebratory day Nov. 25 that included a luncheon for the faculty provided by the Family School Association, performances by the school's band and cheerleaders, and the surprise choreographed dance routine by faculty and staff.

Hoffman Estates Mayor William McLeod proclaimed the day as "St. Hubert Blue Ribbon Day" in the village. Pride and happiness was apparent on each smiling face during the assembly.

St. Hubert Principal Vito DeFrisco and Vice Principal Marcia Larson traveled to Washington, D.C. last month to receive the Blue Ribbon award.

Created in 1982 by the U.S. Department of Education, the Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

St. Hubert was chosen in September as one of 337 schools nationwide to receive the honor. It was one of 50 nominated for the recognition in February by the Council for American Private Education.
