Annual Cookie Walk a tasty church fundraiser

One of Geneva's oldest and tastiest holiday traditions returns for its 32nd year when the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva hosts its annual Cookie Walk from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the church, 102 S. Second St. in historic downtown Geneva.

Held in conjunction with the city's popular Christmas Walk celebration, the Cookie Walk offers a wide array of festive holiday cookies for sale, home-baked by church members. For $14, customers can purchase a box to fill with one to two dozen of the cookies of their choice.

Money raised at the event goes to support the work of the church and the social justice programs it sponsors, including Habitat for Humanity homebuilding and local nonprofit organizations such as Lazarus House and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

In 2013, 60 church volunteers baked more than 7,500 cookies and the church expects to bake even more this year.

"We all make something different and there are many kinds of cookies to choose from - something for everyone," said church member and longtime cookie baker Karen Moore. "The week leading up to the Cookie Walk is busy, but it really puts me in the holiday spirit."

Cookie Walk customers seem to agree. Each year, the lines to buy cookies form early and favorite varieties sell out fast.
