Free forum on fracking Dec. 7 at DuPage UU Church

Fracking will be the topic of a forum at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church, 1828 Old Naperville Road, Naperville.

The hourlong event is free and open to the public.

Fracking is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks in order to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas. Illinois passed legislation allowing fracking about a year and a half ago. Rules regulating fracking were passed at a legislative hearing in November 2014. The process has drawn the attention of many groups and individuals who question its environmental safety.

The forum, part of the church's popular Science Sunday series, will clarify the basic facts and techniques used in the fracking industry, including myths and misconceptions about the process. The speaker will be Mike Winter, a member of DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church and chair of the Science Sunday series.

A Harvard-style debate about fracking is planned for a future Science Sunday forum.

The forum will begin with the brief conclusion of a recent lecture by scientist Scott Thompson about the importance of math in the sciences.

DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church is a growing congregation of more than 300 members who honor many belief systems and are united by shared values of justice, freedom of thought, and peace between all.

In 2013, DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church was awarded the Earth Flag for environmental sustainability from DuPage County and SCARCE (School & Community Assistance with Recycling & Composting Education).
