Wheaton rings in holiday season with tree lighting

Wheaton rang in the holidays and opened the city's annual Dickens of a Christmas celebration Friday evening with a tree-lighting ceremony and lighted parade.

Tree lightings also took place in Bloomingdale, Glen Ellyn and Carol Stream. Friday also marked the opening of a free holiday light show, NaperLights, in Naperville and the start of Cosley Zoo's Festival of Lights in Wheaton.

Starting Saturday and continuing through Dec. 20, Santa will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to welcome visitors at Martin Memorial Plaza, at Front and Main streets in Wheaton.

Horse-drawn carriage rides will be offered between noon and 3 p.m. every Saturday during the same time period.

On Dec. 6, the shops and boutiques in downtown Wheaton will hold a special Holiday Stroll event from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Complimentary treats throughout the day will include chestnuts, cider, eggnog, peppermints and Christmas cookies.
