Free holiday carriage rides begin in Wheaton

Horse-drawn carriages and the first of several visits from Santa gave downtown Wheaton a festive feel this weekend.

The free carriage rides, which are part of the city's annual Dickens of a Christmas celebration, are available from noon to 3 p.m. every Saturday through Dec. 20. They begin at Martin Memorial Plaza, at Front and Main Streets.

Before boarding a carriage, visitors who stop by the plaza between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays through Dec. 20 will get a chance to meet with Santa.

The Dickens of a Christmas celebration also includes a Christmas Holiday Stroll at downtown businesses from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.

Guests will receive complementary holiday treats throughout the day, such as roasting chestnuts, cider, eggnog and peppermints, as they browse Wheaton's shops and boutiques.
