Second Saturday Poetry Workshop set for Dec. 13

The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop to be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec, 13, led by Angela Narcisco Torres. Saturday's topic will be "How Does It All End? A Look at Poetic Closure."

It's been said that it is much easier to get into a poem than to get out of it. As the year comes to a close, the group will explore the different ways to achieve closure in a poem, but also the strategies by which one might resist it, avoiding the pitfalls of "too tidy" an ending. There will be close readings of works that exhibit various ways of effectively ending a poem with a view to applying what you learn to your own poems.

Angela Narciso Torres's first book of poetry, "Blood Orange," won the 2013 Willow Books Literature Award for Poetry. Her most recent work is available or forthcoming in Pirene's Fountain, Cimarron Review, Colorado Review and Cream City Review. A graduate of Warren Wilson MFA program for writers and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Torres has received fellowships from the Illinois Arts Council, Ragdale Foundation and Midwest Writing Center. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Manila, she currently resides in Chicago, where she teaches poetry workshops and serves as a senior poetry editor for RHINO. www.angelanarcisotorres.com

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15. R.S.V.P. at (847) 382-6922 or email at nwcc@att.net.
