Driver hurt after car speeds into Lake Michigan

A man was critically injured in a Chicago hospital after his vehicle plunged into Lake Michigan after crossing multiple lanes of traffic on Lake Shore Drive.

Chicago Fire Department divers pulled the man from the frigid water Friday afternoon within about 20 minutes of the accident.

It's unclear why the vehicle went into the water. Some witnesses reported seeing the car speeding in reverse with the driver's-side door open.

Kevin Shanken told WMAQ-TV he slammed on his own brakes when he saw a car traveling backward in front of him. He said the driver seemed "like he was completely out of control."

Witnesses told WLS-TV they saw lakefront pedestrians scatter when the car raced toward them and into the lake.
