South Elgin builder sentenced in tax case

A judge in Chicago has sentenced a South Elgin home builder to 2 1/2 years in prison for failing to pay nearly $1.3 million in federal taxes and for concealing business interests in his personal bankruptcy case.

A Tuesday statement from the U.S. attorney's office says 64-year-old Dennis Weiss pleaded guilty last year to filing a false income tax return and making false statements in a bankruptcy petition.

He owned Custom Homes by D. R. Weiss, Inc., and Reliable Home Solutions, Inc.

U.S. District Judge John Lee also ordered Weiss pay nearly $300,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. Weiss must report to prison in January after Monday's sentencing.
