Lincoln museum in Springfield opens new exhibit

SPRINGFIELD - A new exhibit at the Abraham Lincoln library in Springfield lets visitors see the Gettysburg Address, Emancipation Proclamation and Thirteenth Amendment in one room.

The exhibit "Undying Words: Lincoln 1858-1865" opened last weekend and runs through February 2016. The exhibit includes the bloodstained gloves Lincoln was carrying when he was assassinated and the bed where he died. Visitors can also see the ink well Lincoln used to write his first inaugural address and a note he sent to Civil War Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.

Lincoln museum officials say the exhibit also looks at the people Lincoln's words affected most, soldiers and slaves. It includes shoes and shackles that slaves wore.

The exhibit is filled with artifacts compiled by the Springfield museum and the Chicago History Museum.
