COD board needed smoked salmon?

I applaud the Daily Herald for running the story about a COD trustee "biting back." COD Trustees spent thousands of our taxpayer dollars on meals for themselves, and Ms. McGuire tries to justify it by saying it is only 0.00017 percent of their $187 million operating budget. Really?

The percentage is not the point. The trustees should be treating taxpayer dollars as their own. If they want to have a team-building meal, why not just order an economical pizza or sub? Why do they need to spend it on smoked salmon and champagne? Why do they even need to have these meals every month? Ms. McGuire said the board only sees each other once a month so the time over a meal is helpful to them. Isn't it their job as a board to meet monthly? Can't they do their job without a free meal every time?

This is just another example of government excess by our elected officials. Would the trustees have spent thousands on these meals if they were paying their own bill? Probably not - so why should they do it with our money? I am deeply disappointed by the careless attitude of the board of trustees.
