Haas has hot hand in Hersey win

Senior guard Payton Haas led the way to a season-opening win for Hersey.

Haas had a team-best 18-points with a pair of 3-pointers as the Huskies topped Glenbrook North 63-60 in tournament play Monday at Niles West.

Sophomore guard Joe Coffaro canned four 3s and finished with 14 points, and Max Heeren had 10 points, including a pair of 3s.

Junior forward Mark Milligan and senior forward Josh Mailloux both had 8 points, with all of Mailloux's scoring coming on 4 baskets in the fourth quarter.

Prospect 69, Walther Christian 14: Almost everyone got in the act for Prospect as 16 of 17 available players scored for a decisive win in Game 1 of the season in tournament play at St. Viator.

Senior guard Ernest Kiseliovas reached double figures with 10 points, senior forward Peter Fusilero had 8 and sophomore guard Frankie Mack had 7.

The Knights shot 16 of 22 from the free throw line and outrebounded Walther Christian 45-23.

Prospect's defense held Walther scoreless in the third quarter.

St. Joseph 64, Schaumburg 49: The Saxons came up short in coach Marty Manning's debut against what is expected to be a terrific St. Joseph squad in first-round tournament play at St. Charles East.

Leyden 67, Wheeling 47: The Eagles picked up a decisive win in first-round play of the Ridgewood Invitational. In Tuesday's games, Wheeling meets Lakeview at 5:30 p.m. and Leyden meets host Ridgewood at 7 p.m.

Libertyville 77, Maine West 40: Conor Peterson and Brandon Rule scored a game-high 17 points and Joe Borcia had 11 to help the host Wildcats past the Warriors in the first round of Maine West's tournament. The first-round games were at Libertyville; the rest of the action is at Maine West.

Senior guard Matt Acevedo finished with a team-best 8 points for Maine West, and Julian Dones made a pair of 3s to finish with 6.

Libertyville scored 32 points in the first quarter.

Marmion 80, Christian Liberty 33: In season-opening play at Buffalo Grove's touranment, Hunter Weber had a game-high 14 points and Jake Esp had 13 for the Cadets.

Ben Kemper led the Chargers with 8 points and Sam Silva had 6.

Fremd 2, Clemente 0: The Vikings picked up victory No. 1 of the season, but probably not in the manner the defending MSL champs would have preferred.

Coach Adam Hoover showed up at Fenton for the scheduled 7 p.m. tip, but his players did not, the result of a transportation miscommunication.

Fremd is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday matchup at Fenton against Mather.

Wheaton North 75, West Chicago 68: In a tournament opener at Hoffman Estates, Wheaton North grabbed a 10-point lead by the half and managed to hold off the Wildcats, who drew within 3 points with about a minute left.

Dan Traversa led Wheaton North with a game-high 24 points, and Mike Bibbs had 22 for West Chicago.

Lake Zurich 62, Waukegan 57: Jack O'Neill had a career-high 17 points to help Lake Zurich to victory in tournament action at Grant. Mike Travlos led the Bears with 20 points and Will McClaughry added 10.

Vernon Hills 63, Maine East 53: Robby Nardini had 20 points to lead Vernon Hills to a victory in the Northridge Prep Thanksgiving tournament. Cory Levin and Matt Weaver each added 11 points for the Cougars.

Lake Forest Academy 81, Mundelein 51: Despite 16 points from Tyler Olson, Mundelein was defeated decisively in its season opener at its own Thanksgiving tournament.

Carmel 84, McHenry 67: At Crystal Lake Central, Zavier Barnes scored 23 points and Shareif Belser-Baily had 20 points to lead four players in double figures for Carmel. Julian Johnson and Mike Pabst added 13 and 11 points respectively for the Corsairs.
