Dawn Patrol: Snow on the way; Bears beat Bucs 21-13

Gusty winds, snow expected in some suburbs today

Be sure to wear a coat and bring a good scraper before you head out the door this morning because there is snow in the forecast. Colder air, strong winds and possibly 3 to 5 inches of snow will arrive in the area Monday, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service in Chicago issued a winter weather advisory Sunday afternoon forecasting snow and 20 to 30 mph winds, with gusts nearing 40 mph, from 3 p.m. today through midnight for McHenry, Kane and Lake counties. More than 30 horses reported dead in Crystal Lake-area barn fire

The scene repeated itself again and again yesterday morning: People walked up, tears streaming down their faces, and put their arms around Amber Bauman. Bauman is the owner of Valley View Acres, a family-run horse-boarding business in unincorporated McHenry County near Crystal Lake. A fire broke out in her barn late Saturday night, authorities said, killing more than 30 horses. "I'm devastated," Bauman said yesterday, close to tears herself. "This is every barn owner's worst nightmare." Full story.

A 20-year-old Elgin man will be in bond court this morning facing resisting arrest charges after he attempted to flee police by running atop ice on the Fox River yesterday morning. He did not succeed. Police said Melvin Ramsey, of the 200 block of Jewett Street in Elgin, made it a short distance from the shore before the ice gave way and he fell through into the river. New Des Plaines police dog helps recover $30,000 in drug money

Des Plaines' new police dog helped recover $30,000 in drug seizure funds just days after hitting the streets for the first time. But it's the simple things that bring Bane happiness. "When he does something good, he gets his toy," said Officer Steven Dickson, a 7-year veteran of the force. "When he does something bad, he doesn't get his toy. His toy means the world to him." The rubber tug-o-war object is the reward given to Bane, an 18-month-old Austrian Shepherd, when he successfully finds drugs or other objects. Full story.

Turnovers boost Bears over Bucs, 21-13

The best thing the Bears' offense had going for it yesterday was the Bears' defense, which gift-wrapped the ball inside the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 20-yard line twice in a 19-second span of the third quarter. The Bears' offense didn't do much right all day, managing a season-low 204 yards, but at least it didn't squander those short fields. Matt Forte runs reached the end zone both times to spark a 21-13 comeback victory over their former coach. The Bears forced turnovers on three straight Bucs possessions in the final five minutes of a decisive third quarter to drop former Bears head coach Lovie Smith's team to 2-9. Full story.

Imrem: Bears so very fortunate to dodge a big mess

Daily Herald sports columnist Mike Imrem writes that the Bears dodged a "spitball" yesterday at Soldier Field, as opposed to a "bullet." "But the opponents were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and they do little more than fire spitballs and rubber bands at opponents. At its most confrontational, this was a pillow fight between two teams, two head coaches and two quarterbacks that deserve each other. The Bears didn't so much come from behind to win 21-13 as they let the Bucs retreat from ahead to lose 13-21." Full column.

Rozner: Bad Bears not quite as bad as bad Bucs

Daily Herald sports columnist Barry Rozner writes that yesterday's match between the Bears and Bucs was maybe "just two bad NFL teams trying to outlast one another, watching to see which one would commit the most turnovers, penalties and mental mistakes." "There was a genuine tension on the field before the game, palpable especially for the former Bears players and coaches, who were reserved while saying hello to old friends. 'I really wasn't into family reunions or anything like that today,' said Bucs coach Lovie Smith. 'I've been away from here for a period of time now so I've had the chance to see a lot of people.'" Full column.
