Cold complicates Illinois duck hunting

LASALLE, Ill. (AP) - A mid-November cold snap has brought an early end to the duck hunting season for many participants in north central Illinois.

The (LaSalle) News Tribune reports some hunting spots in La Salle, Bureau, Putnam and Marshall counties were iced over or inaccessible from Nov. 15 until at least Nov. 22.

Jeff Niemann of Ottawa attempted to reach a duck blind near the Starved Rock Lock and Dam on Saturday afternoon. But the hunter says he was forced to stop about 400 yards short of the blind because his boat wasn't heavy enough to break through the ice. He estimates the ice was 3-4 inches thick in some spots.

Niemann says he also saw other hunters who were having difficulty getting to and from their blinds.
