Lake County Stallions Bantam team wins championship

The Lake County Stallions of Mundelein won The Chicagoland Youth Football League Big 10 Bantam Class 2A Championship against Bartlett at Glenbard North High School on Nov. 23.

The group of first-, second- and third-graders were awarded with a trophy that towers over most members of the team, along with individual championship trophies and a championship ring.

The team was on the ropes for the last five weeks of the season, needing to win their final two regular season games just to make it to the playoffs, and then knocking off the highest seeded teams on the road in order to win the championship.

The team succeeded thanks to great leadership of head coach Dan McNelly and assistants Pat Lucansky, Dennis Lichter, Dustin Hermestroff, Jeff Junia, Kerry Soudan, Garry Devine, Mark Dickey and Cristopher Nolan.

Parents worked as announcers, chain crew, and the team had team moms that helped make everything possible. The trophy will likely be shown at local schools attended by some of the winners, who live from Mundelein to Vernon Hills to Lake Bluff.

The new champions are Lucas Dickey, Maddux Hermestroff, Matthew Lucansky, Ethan Thomas, Trey Thompson, Danny McNelly, Joey Domas, Jake Junia, Joshua Lichter, Raleigh Nolan, Cooper Machnik, Jayden Gomez, Aiden Devine, James Krusinski, Brian Fragassi, Coleton Soudan, Patrick Lucansky and Logan Zupancic,
