Fremd rolls past Cary-Grove at Lakes

Fremd's girls basketball team continued its run through the Turkey Thriller with a perfect record by defeating Cary-Grove 67-40 at Lakes High School on Saturday afternoon.

Duke recruit Haley Gorecki struck for a season-high 25 points, while also collecting 5 steals and with 4 assists.

"Haley did a nice job on Katie Barker (Cary-Grove standout)," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "Katie came into the game averaging 25 points and we held her to 13. She is a great player (Ohio recruit) and I thought our team was very aware of where she was all game."

Other leaders for Fremd (3-0) were juniors Brianna Lewis (4 assists, 4 steals) and Bryana Hopkins (8 rebounds, 4 steals).

"I was very pleased with our effort and execution in an afternoon game (1 p.m. start) despite a very quick turnaround (after the Vikes played Friday night)," Yates added. "I thought Gorecki, Hopkins, and Lewis had some very dominating stretches of basketball."

Sophomore Grace Tworek added 8 points for Fremd.

Elk Grove 41, Johnsburg 34: Former standout forward Jen Guth won a lot of games as a basketball player at Buffalo Grove High School.

On Saturday, she won her first as a head varsity coach.

Guth's Grenadiers were led by senior center Amber Lindfors' game-high 20 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocked shots.

"It was a great game for Amber," Guth said. "We were able to get her the ball and she finished well. She had a lot of pressure on her and she was able to convert. She was huge on both ends for us."

Alex Masnica added 10 points.

"Alex also stepped up with some nice outside shots," Guth added. "The girls have been working hard and I am so proud of them."

Prospect 63, Queen of Peace 13: Prospect clinched its second straight York tourney championship by rolling to its third straight win.

Senior Catherine Sherwood (14 points), senior Taylor Will (12) and sophomore Haley Will (7) were top scorers for the Knights.

Now with 1,294 career points. Taylor Will needs 11 to move into second on Prospect's all-time list behind Colleen Grant (1,352).

"It was a great team effort by all 12 girls," said Prospect coach Ashley Graham. "We moved the ball well on offense and got great looks at the basket. Defensively, the girls did a real solid job."

The Knights (3-0) meet Wheaton North on Wednesday. The Falcons have 2 losses in the tourney.

Rolling Meadows 56, Lakes 51 (OT): Rolling Meadows improved to 3-0 in the Turkey Thriller as Katherine Nolan scored a team-high 16 points with 14 rebounds.

"Katherine Nolan played her best game as a varsity player," said Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "Jamie Berry and Megan King hit big shots for us down the stretch."

Berry finished with 12 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals while King had 11 points (three 3-pointers).

Hannah Mickey added 8 points and 8 rebounds for the winners while teammate Kyra Spiwak grabbed 5 rebounds with 7 points.

Hersey 53, Libertyville 41: Claire Gritt (5 rebounds), Gina Miklasz (4 steals) and Annie Korff (6 rebounds) each scored 11 points while Maddie Berigan added 8 with 6 rebounds for Hersey which improved to 2-0 in the BG tournament.

Gritt had two 3-pointers and Miklasz and Weyhrich 1 apiece.

"We had some good spurts offensively and defensively," said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. "Yet we were not consistent on either end of the court. I thought Gina Miklasz provided very good energy for us."

Conant 66, Wheaton North 37: Conant coach Deirdre Naughton watched her team improve to 2-1 at the York tournament as senior Katie (12 points, 3 assists), Nireet Dhillon (10 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds), Alissa Wachal (9 points, 5 rebounds) and Lexi Zades (8 points, 3 assists) were top scorers for the Cougars.

Wheeling 60, Taft 30: Melissa Craver (13 points), Deanna Kuzmanic (12) and Hailey Dammeier (11) led the offense for Wheeling (3-0) which improved to 2-0 in the Niles North Thanksgiving tournament.

Proviso West 63, Hoffman Estates 57: Mynk Richardson-Clerk (13 points), Mary Saitta (11), Monraia Wilson (10) and Tayler Williams (9) led Hoffman Estates (1-2) in the third-round game of the Hawks own tournament.

Niles West 43, Maine West 18: Freshman Catherine Johnson's 6 points led Maine West (0-3) in the third-round game of the Hoffman Estates tournament.

Huntley 47, St. Viator 46: Maddie McAteer (13 points), Mya Clark (12), Kayne Stanley (8) and Jess Hohlweg (6) led St. Viator (1-2) in its third game of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tournament.
