Elgin man charged with 5th DUI

A 46-year-old Elgin man was charged with his fifth DUI, the result of a roadside safety check in Elgin, according to police and court records.

Jesus Ignacio-Almazan, of the 900 block of Illinois Avenue, is being held at the Kane County jail on $210,000 bail, meaning he must post $21,000 to be released while the charges are pending.

Officers directed Ignacio-Almazan into a roadside safety checkpoint near National Street and Times Square Drive at about 11:03 p.m. Friday. There, a police report said, officers saw Ignacio-Almazan with "very red, glassy eyes" and reeking of alcohol. They officers also saw two empty bottles of beer in the driver door storage area and another bottle in the center console with liquid still in it.

Ignacio-Almazan failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. His record showed 10 previous convictions for driving while license suspended or revoked, as well as four convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol, the police report said.

Information about his previous DUIs was not immediately available.

If convicted of felony aggravated DUI, he faces anywhere from probation to 15 years in prison.

Ignacio-Almazan's only previous arrest in Kane County was for driving while license revoked and resisting arrest in Carpentersville in November 2009, court records show.

He is next due in court on Dec. 4, and faces charges of driving without insurance, driving on a suspended or revoked license and possession of open alcohol, records show.
