The Wide Awakes - Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society November Program

The grassroots movement of the Wide Awakes, a pre-Civil War political club that spread to cities across the North, played a huge role in the election of Abraham Lincoln. Outfitted with capes, caps and blazing torches, they ignited great enthusiasm for the young Republican Party and its presidential candidate.

Cook Librarian Sonia Schoenfield will present a fascinating look at this group and talk about our local connection: the Libertyville Wide Awake banner and memorabilia displayed in the Ansel B. Cook House today.

"The Libertyville Wide Awakes really made a name for our town at the big political rally in Chicago in October 1860," says Schoenfield. "They did our town proud."

The Wide Awakes were a national phenomenon in 1860 but within a few years they had faded into obscurity. Don't miss this unique slice of our local history.

All of the Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society meetings are free to attend and open to the public.
