Ceramic artist displays works in Waukegan galler

Submitted by Mary Clare Jakes

"In Beauty May She Walk," a ceramic art show by Mary Clare Jakes, is on display at Dandelion Gallery in Waukegan through Dec. 12. The gallery is open Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. or by appointment. Dandelion Gallery is at 109 S. Genesee St., Waukegan.

Jakes is a potter who has been exhibiting at ArtWauk and Lake County for the past several years. She uses vintage textiles to create the patterning seen in her pieces.

"I see great beauty in the laces, linens and doilies that women have made in the past," Jakes said. "With my art, I want to reflect that beauty in my ceramics and often am able to enhance these designs."

Because the textile is not destroyed in the process, Mary Clare often does consignments for customers who want a permanent memento from a cherished family lace, tablecloth or doily.

The show contains a series of large-scale pieces, creating a rainbow wall of color. In addition, she has used different doilies and linens to create Christmas ornaments: stars, trees and butterflies, along with soap dishes and triangular flower vases.

The artist will be at the gallery from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, which is Small Business Saturday, and Dec. 6, which is HolidayFest throughout the downtown.
