Sign up for Bison Feeding at Lords Park Zoo

After the last Thanksgiving turkey has been eaten, consider landing a hand to the zookeepers at the Lords Park Zoo at 7 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29.

Children and adults will have the chance to participate in the morning feeding of the zoo's year-round residents: the deer, elk and bison.

Participants will meet at the Elgin Public Museum of Natural History and Anthropology at 225 Grand Blvd. in Elgin, to learn a little about the natural history of these hoofed animals from Marge Fox, museum educator.

Afterward, everyone will walk to the Lords Park Zoo. The zoo received two female bison, Drew and Becky, from Brookfield Zoo a few years ago. Three young elk joined the herd this year; this will be their first winter.

"The bison are the most magnificent animals to get up close to!," says Marge Fox, longtime museum educator. "November is a great time of year to see all the animals. They are starting to get their heavy winter coat."

The Elgin Public Museum has been hosting Bison Feedings once a month for the last three years with the help of the City of Elgin and the Friends of the Lords Park Zoo.

The museum is the only natural history museum in the Fox River Valley. The program is limited to 12 people.

To reserve your spot, contact the museum at (847) 380-0672 or russell_epm@cityofelgin.org.
