Schaumburg ready to release 2014 community ornament

Schaumburg will usher in the holiday season next Friday, Nov. 28, with the village's annual tree lighting, a visit from Santa, and the release of its 2014 community ornament depicting the historic Schweikher-Langsdorf House.

The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with caroling at the Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court. The fire department will escort Santa at 6:30 p.m. to the plaza between the Prairie Center and the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center.

With the help of village officials, Santa will light the tree, which will be decorated with ornaments made by local youth groups and organizations.

After the lighting ceremony, Santa will meet with youngsters in the Prairie Center's Maggie Atcher Theatre, where seasonal entertainment will be provided and refreshments served. Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras.

Attendees also are asked to donate nonperishable food items for the Schaumburg Food Pantry. Requested items include canned meals, soup, juice, snacks, crackers, dry pasta, tomato products, tissues, paper towels, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner. All items can be placed in the designated boxes in the Prairie Center lobby.

Donated items also will be accepted in the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday until Jan. 2.

A Schweikher-Langsdorf House ornament costs $15, and can be bought either at the Prairie Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday or online at villageofschaumburg.com. Online purchases will include a $2 charge for postage and handling.

The new ornament is the ninth the village has produced. Limited supplies of the previous years' ornaments are also available.

Completed in 1938, the Schweikher-Langsdorf House is the only site in Schaumburg listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information on its history, visit SchweikherHouse.org.
