District 50 superintendent salutes board members

Woodland Elementary District 50 Superintendent Joy Swoboda says she has much appreciation for school board members.

Swoboda issued her comments in light of School Board Members Day this month. The special day is meant to recognize and thank Gurnee-based Woodland's seven school board members for their volunteer service to the district and their contributions to the schools.

"School board members give their time and volunteer their service to our community," Swoboda said. "Each board member is passionate about providing a high-quality educational experience for the children. They do so without monetary compensation or public accolades. However, their decisions affect the children, staff and community, something each of our seven board members takes very seriously."

As community trustees for the schools, the elected school board members have oversight in District 50 for an annual budget of about $91 million, 6,200 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade, roughly 860 employees and five schools.

District 50's board members are Mark Vondracek, Vince Juarez, Chris Schrantz, Bill Barnabee, Terry Hall, Tony DeMonte and Carla Little. Vondracek is the board president, a post that comes from a vote from peers.

"School board members are public servants that must listen to the people they represent. The decisions they are asked to make are oftentimes ones that require a great deal of thought, reflection and research," Swoboda said.

"Their responsibility is to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars, while also ensuring that our students have access to the necessary resources at Woodland."
