"We have so much to be thankful for this season," Sheriff Keith Nygren said yesterday, beaming at the first responders and supporting officers who saved the day Oct. 16 when a gunman in Holiday Hills opened fire, wounding two deputies. Schools plead two sides of proposed state funding

Illinois lawmakers yesterday faced a parade of school officials, some begging the state to make them winners and the others fearing they'd soon be made losers. Lawmakers did neither. After an Illinois House hearing to air opinions from across the state, lawmakers will continue to consider a controversial proposal aimed at sending more money to poorer Illinois school districts - but the decision may not come for a while. Education coalition unveils policy recommendations

As legislators in Springfield debated school funding in Senate Bill 16, a group made up of some of the state's largest education associations debuted its own education reform plan yesterday. Vision 20/20 is the product of a two-year partnership among the Illinois Association of School Administrators, the Illinois Principals Association, the Illinois Association of School Business Officials, the Illinois Association of School Boards and the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools. Anti-overdose initiative launched in Lake County

The trainers have been trained and soon police officers in 32 Lake County communities will be equipped and ready to administer an antidote for opioid overdoses, including heroin. "This is something, quite simply, we know will save lives," Lake County State's Attorney Mike Nerheim said yesterday to officially launch the naloxone program. Full story.

Archbishop Cupich speaks of protecting children

Blase Cupich became the archbishop of Chicago yesterday after his predecessor handed him a bishop's staff and relinquished the chair that symbolizes the leadership of the nation's third-largest diocese. Report: Lake County sheriff official pulls over school bus to give son lunch

A Lake County sheriff's office lieutenant is under investigation for making a traffic stop on a Johnsburg High School bus late last week in order to deliver lunch to his son, authorities said. Lt. Brian Keller was driving an unmarked Lake County police squad car when he stopped the school bus at McCullom Lake and Ringwood roads in Johnsburg about 7 a.m. Nov. 11, Lake County Undersheriff Ray Rose confirmed Tuesday.
