Fox River Grove woman wins quilt competition

Linda Stengele of Fox River Grove is the winner of the Heritage Quilters' 2014 "Mostly Morris" quilt.

The quilt, a card trick pattern featuring botanical fabrics, is an homage to British wallpaper designer William Morris.

Stengele, the village's unofficial historian and a die-hard supporter of preserving history, said she has been buying quilt raffle tickets since the McHenry County Historical Society and its volunteer quilters launched the fundraiser about 25 years ago.

"It got to the point where it was like, 'Here's my donation. I don't think I'm going to win," Stengele said with a laugh.

The drawing was held Nov. 12, after a presentation by quilting expert Debra G. Henninger of Metamora. The author of "Hobo Quilts and Railroads" talked about her book and her quilts.
