Murphysboro alderman gets 9 years for sex abuse
MURPHYSBORO, Ill. - A Murphysboro alderman has been sentenced to nine years in prison for battery and sexual assault.
Ronald Nolan pleaded guilty Monday to charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery for holding a 20-year-old Carbondale woman against her will inside his vehicle in September 2013. The 47-year-old sexually abused the woman as he drove around Jackson and Union counties.
Nolan was charged with trying to escape from his cell at the Jackson County Jail a month after his arrest.
Six charges against him were dropped in exchange for his plea. He will serve two years of mandatory supervised release and must register as a sex offender.
Murphysboro Mayor Will Stephens says the city is moving forward with removing Nolan as an alderman.
