Rolling Meadows teen found dead in Hawthorn Woods park

Hawthorn Woods police say a Rolling Meadows teenager killed himself Tuesday in a village park.

Police Chief Jennifer Paulus said officers found the 18-year-old boy at Heritage Oaks Park near Fairfield Road. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Officials have not yet released the victim's name.

The teen asked his 5,000 Twitter followers to contact Hawthorn Woods police Tuesday, Paulus said. She said officers went to the park after someone who saw the tweet called authorities at 9:13 a.m. Tuesday.

Paulus said the teenager graduated from Lake Zurich High School in 2014 and previously lived in Hawthorn Woods. She said it was not immediately known how long the boy resided in Rolling Meadows.

In an email to parents, Lake Zurich High School Principal Kent Nightlinger said crisis response teams will be available to students throughout the week.
