Mount Prospect man charged with child pornography

A Mount Prospect teen was ordered held on $500,000 bail after prosecutors say police recovered from his laptop 200 images and 10 videos depicting child pornography.

Fernando Devargas, 19, was ordered by the judge not to use the Internet or a cellphone and not to have contact with anyone younger than 18.

Last May, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children notified Mount Prospect police that the center had received a tip indicating someone using a specific online account was uploading pornographic images of children, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Elizabeth Brogan.

In October, police executed a search warrant at a Mount Prospect home where Devargas lived but learned that he had moved out a month earlier.

Police eventually recovered a laptop prosecutors say belongs to Devargas, which they say contains the images, Brogan said.

Devargas, who has no criminal background, could face up to seven years in prison if convicted of the most serious charges.

He next appears in court on Dec. 8.
