Hollingsworth adds to honors at Wheaton College

Marshall Hollingsworth made some history this fall.

The former Libertyville Wildcat became the first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin competitor in league history to win both the CCIW Newcomer (2012) and Player of the Year awards in men's soccer.

Hollingsworth is the 21st Wheaton College player to win the award since the conference began the honor in 1989.

In 21 games this season he is second on the team with 9 goals and 6 assists. In conference play, Hollingsworth scored 3 goals with 3 assists.

The Thunder's head coach, Mike Giuliano, shared coach of the year honors with Millikin's Chad Jones. Giuliano led the Thunder to an 18-3 regular season record, including a 6-1 mark in CCIW play. It's Giuliano's fourth such award, making him the first CCIW men's soccer coach to win four of them.

Women's volleyball

Carthage junior Karen Chin (Mundelein) was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region team.

Chin averaged 10.5 assists per set and 2.82 digs.

Lady Reds coach and former Stevenson head coach Leanne Ulmer earned regional coach of the year honors for the third time. Ulmer also won the award in 2006 and 2007.

• While her high school alma mater was enjoying a championship season in volleyball, Bria Hailey was doing the same in college this fall.

Hailey, a former Schaumburg Saxon, now plays middle blocker for Carthage College and she was named to the College Conference of Wisconsin and Illinois first team.

Schaumburg enjoyed championships in the Mid-Suburban West and the regional this fall under coach Jeanette Pancratz, who played a key role in Hailey's decision to attend Carthage.

Hailey helped the Lady Reds to a school record regular-season 35-3 record and league championship.

Carthage qualified for the NCAA tourney for the first time since 2011, the year that former Saxon Drewann Pancratz was the setter for Carthage.

Hailey's former Schaumburg teammate Sara Travis, a senior right side hitter for Millikin, made the CCIW third team.

Carthage coach Leanne Ulmer, a former Stevenson girls head coach, was named the CCIW 'Coach of the year."

• North Central junior setter Laura Kluk (Palatine) was named to the second team All-CCIW. She led the team in assists for the third consecutive season, tallying 978 while ranking third in CCIW play, averaging 8.50 assists per set. She finished the season with 132 kills, while ranking second on the team in digs (314) and service aces (33).

It was Kluk's second all-conference honor, her first being in the 2012 season where she also won CCIW Freshman of the Year.

• Cornell sophomore outside hitter Diamond Boyd (Elk Grove) was named the Midwest Conference Volleyball offensive performer of the week in the final week of the regular season.

Boyd's week was highlighted by a spectacular 29-kill performance in a four-set victory over rival Coe, champions of the Iowa Conference.

The 5-foot-10 Boyd posted a hefty .587 attack percentage - two errors on 46 swings - and tied Kristin Paczosa's 2007 school record for most kills in a match.

She more than doubled her previous-best kill output (14) against the Kohawks. For the week, Boyd hit .405 and totaled 57 kills (4.07 kills per set). Boyd also had 12 digs and 10 blocks (0.71 blocks per set).

Women's soccer

University of Dubuque junior defender Kimberly Trinco (Conant) helped her team clinch a berth in the D3 NCAA tournament with a conference tournament victory over No. 2 Central College.

It was Dubuque's second Iowa Conference tournament title and first since 2009. It is the first time in school history the Spartans (16-4-1) have won both the regular season IIAC title and the IIAC tournament title.
