Naperville North students make good on pledge to shave heads to battle cancer

Bridget Gustafson and Kira Couch walked through the room yesterday while family and friends cheered, clapped and reached out to rub the girls' heads. Bridget and Kira, best friends and juniors at Naperville North High School, had just had their heads shaved in an effort to raise money for the Swifty Foundation, an organization that Bridget's twin brother, Michael, helped establish shortly before dying from brain cancer. Police: Man shot in chase he led still improving

The 18-year-old Ingleside man who police say led them on a destructive car chase last Thursday night is still recovering from a gunshot wound to his cheek and a broken arm and is no longer in critical condition. Advocate Condell Medical Center officials said yesterday Ronald Q. Maas is improving and in good condition but remains at the Libertyville hospital where he was taken after police apprehended him early Friday morning. Full story.

David Schwimmer visits Mundelein High's production of his play

Mundelein High School theater students received quite the thrill an hour before their final performance of "Trust," when their teacher told them that David Schwimmer, who wrote the play and also starred on "Friends," would be in the audience. Theater teacher Jonathan Meier said yesterday he had told the students that Schwimmer, who had corresponded with Meier since first giving them permission to put on the play, would try to make it to one of the performances but was unsure it would fit his schedule. Step in the right direction for Bears

To the Bears' credit, there wasn't too much gloating yesterday after they snapped a three-game losing streak with their first home victory of the season, a 21-13 decision over the Minnesota Vikings. The Bears outgained the Vikings 468-243, as their ridiculed and reeling defense allowed its fewest yards of the season. Full story.

Forte carries the day for Bears' offense

Bears running back Matt Forte carried the ball a season-high 26 times (18 in the second half) for 117 yards (4.5 average) in the win over the Vikings. Forte got 32 of those yards on one play, which looked almost like vintage Walter Payton. Full story.

Patrick Kane scores 3 points in Hawks' 6-2 win

Patrick Kane, mired in a 1-goal-in-11-game goal drought as of last week, put together a 3-point game last night in the Blackhawks' 6-2 victory over Dallas at the United Center. Kane, off a pretty feed by Brad Richards, ignited a 4-goal third period by snapping a 2-2 tie 4:49 into the third period. Full story.
