Government. The best money can buy.

We are rapidly moving toward the "best government that money can buy." This is true both in Illinois and throughout the country.

As a result of the Citizens United case, the Supreme Court has permitted unlimited amounts of money to enter political contests via outside sources. In 11 Senate races in this year's election, outside money totaled $200 million. In one contest, the outside money accounted for 80 percent of the spending by the winning candidate.

In Illinois, Mr. Quinn's total spending was equaled from Mr. Rauner's personal fortune. The end result was that Mr. Quinn was outspent two-to-one in the total campaign.

In the Daily Herald of Nov. 12, Gene Lyons' column pointed to the impact of money and the Citizens United decision. He points to an amendment to the Constitution as a solution. He does not state the obvious, that this is extremely unlikely where Republicans control Congress and many state legislatures.

For the foreseeable future we will be burdened with the "best" that money can buy.
