Northbrook Park District Offers Free Ice Skating Lesson

Dozens of young children can experience the excitement of ice skating for the first time during Try Skating for Free on Saturday, December 13 at the Northbrook Sports Center. Children, ages 3 and up, can attend one of two free classes from the Northbrook Park District to see if they are ready for figure skating or hockey lessons. Before stepping onto the ice to learn basic skating skills, the beginners practice the correct way to fall and get up.

Some of the children are apprehensive at first, but professional instructors help them onto the ice and are assisted by enthusiastic student teachers. The very young children can use plastic shopping carts to remain steady as they move on the ice. The students leave with smiling faces and want to skate again. Parents and grandparents occasionally bring cameras to capture the first on-ice experience. Perhaps the next Gracie Gold or Patrick Kane will get started in Northbrook!

The free classes are from 1:15-1:45pm and 2-2:30pm and open to children who have not taken skating lessons. Children will be grouped by age. Families can sign up at nbparks.org, the Northbrook Sports Center, or the Leisure Center.
