9 years for Crystal Lake lawyer who stole $1.2 million from clients

A former Crystal Lake attorney was sentenced to nine years in prison for stealing more $1.2 million from clients, prosecutors said.

Curt Rehberg, 50, of Cary, was arrested in September 2013 and pleaded guilty earlier this year to felony theft.

Rehberg faced between four and 15 years in prison, and because of the amount of the theft, probation was not an option.

Assistant State's Attorney Robert Zalud said he argued for a lengthy prison term, noting that one theft involved a $500,000 donation to a children's hospital that was left in a will.

Zalud said Rehberg's defense attorney argued for the four-year minimum and Rehberg also apologized for his actions.

Rehberg, whose license has been suspended by the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, could be out of prison in about four years.

Rehberg has been held at the McHenry County jail since early June and gets about five months credit toward his sentence.

Under state law, he can have his prison sentence cut in half for good behavior.
