Illinois man gets 8 years in fatal DUI crash

URBANA - A Champaign County judge has sentenced a man to eight years in prison for causing a fatal car crash while he had a marijuana byproduct in his system.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports 33-year-old Timothy Bretz of Villa Grove was sentenced Monday after being convicted last month of aggravated driving under the influence of an intoxicating compound.

Bretz was driving a semitrailer grain truck in October 2013 when he collided at an unmarked intersection with a car driven by 19-year-old Wyatt Jones of Broadland. Jones died the next day.

An attorney for Bretz argued he wasn't feeling the effects of the marijuana he had smoked two weeks before the accident. He says the law is wrong.

Bretz will be required to serve 85 percent of the sentence.
