Wimer takes his spot in Palatine's Hall of Fame

One of the finest swimmers and water polo players to attend Palatine High School recently received his dues when he was inducted into the school's athletic Hall of Fame.

As a freshman at the District 211 school, Dan Wimer immediately made an impact with his team as well as the conference, winning all-conference awards in both sports.

His list of efforts and accomplishments became more impressive as his career went on.

Wimer was a Mid-Suburban League champion five times with four sectional championships. He was an eight-time state finalist and set multiple school records.

Wimer capped his stellar career by winning the state championship in the 50-yard freestyle his senior year.

He was Palatine's 'Athlete of the Year' in 2000 and continued his swimming career at the University of Kentucky and the University of Arizona, where he held numerous conference and national honors.

Glasgow gathering

Northwestern freshman Alexis Glasgow (Rolling Meadows) had her own fan club when she played in the Wildcats' 78-47 exhibition win over Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday.

The fifth grade Rolling Meadows' feeder team, celebrating Kendall Fahnoe's birthday, was at Welsh-Ryan Arena, where they saw Glasgow score 5 points, including a 3-pointer from the corner, in 11 minutes of floor time.

Kendall is the daughter of Chris Fahnoe, the assistant superintendent for technology for District 25 in Arlington Heights.

Baseball

• St. Viator senior shortstop Kevin Monson and center fielder Ben Dickey will sign letters of intent on Wednesday.

Dickey will sign with Northwestern while Monson is doing the same forr Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich.

• Wheeling senior standout Brenden Spillane will ink his letter of intent to Illinois in a ceremony at the school on Wednesday morning.

Football

Augustana linebacker Jack Asquini was recently featured in the Dispatch-Argus publication which circulates in the Quad Cities. It highlights the way the sophomore from Buffalo Grove High School has helped fill the void of Division III all-American Erik Westerberg, who graduated.

Heading into the eighth week, Asquini led the Vikings with 65 total stops (team-high in both solos with 46 and assists with 19). He was second on the team with five tackles-for-loss, has two recovered fumbles and two pass breakups.

The story gives an inside look at Asquini and focuses on how he is becoming a leader and gaining confidence in that role.

Men's soccer

Zach Solorio (Elk Grove) scored the only goal for Millikin in the 11th minute when he put back a rebounded shot in the 11th minute giving the Big Blue a 1-0 victory over Agustana.

It was the fourth win in a row for Millikin and improved the Big Blue's record to 9-7-1, 4-3.

Women's soccer

Butler senior forward Elise Kotsakis (Fremd) was selected as a District 5 (IL, IN, MI, OH) NCAA Division I winner and named to the Capital One Academic All-District second team.

Kotsakis earned the honors by posting a 3.62 grade-point average. She will graduate from Butler with a degree in Actuarial Science.

On the soccer field, Kotsakis enters the final weekend of the regular season leading the team in multiple categories. She has a team-high 21 points off 9 goals and 3 assists.

Two of her team-high 9 goals were game-winners.

A starter in all 18 contests this season, Kotsakis leads the team in shots on goal with 36 and is second in total shots with 60. The senior recently moved to second place all-time in the Butler women's soccer record book with 263 career shots. She's sixth in the Butler record book with 24 career goals.

• DePaul freshman forward Alexa Ben (Schaumburg) was voted Big East Rookie of the Year by the league's coaches.

She was also chosen for the all-Big East second team and the league's All-Rookie Team.

Ben finished her first regular season of collegiate soccer ranked second in the Big East with 28 points, including 16 in conference play, while her 6 goals against league foes also listed runner-up. The freshman recorded at least one point in 14 of 18 games this season and enters the postseason on a five-game scoring streak.

She was selected Big East Rookie of the Week five times this season, including the final three weeks of the year. Ben is DePaul's first Big East Rookie of the Year.

Ben and fellow freshmen Elizabeth Endy (defender) and Lucy Edwards (midfielder) were selected for the Big East All-Rookie Team.

• Illinois State freshman Kelli Zickert (Buffalo Grove) was named the Missouri Valley Conference's freshman of the year.

Although she started only six games this year, Zickert scored 5 and added 3 assists for a total of 13 points. She tied for third in goals scored for a high-powered Redbirds attack that netted 17 more tallies than the next closest Valley team.

• Northern Illinois' Lauren Gierman (Hersey) was named to the Mid-American Conference all-freshman team.

• Lewis University junior forward Maggie Moran (Rolling Meadows) was named to the 2014 All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's soccer second team.

Moran recorded 3 goals and 4 assists this fall. Her best game of the season came late in the year when the Flyers topped Saint Joseph 3-0.

Moran had a goal and assisted on the other two tallies. This is Moran's second All-GLVC honor of her career. Last year she was named to the All-GLVC Third Team.

She helped Lewis finish the season on a five-match unbeaten streak to qualify for the GLVC Tournament for the second time in three seasons.

Women's tennis

Augustana sophomores Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove) and Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove) were named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin first team.

It was a repeat selection for the Goggin twins on the CCIW all-conference team. Lauren was also a first team selection in 2013 while Dana was a second team pick a year ago.

Both were instrumental in helping the Vikings of head coach Jon Miedema finish the fall portion of the 2014-15 campaign with a 12-2 dual meet record and a 5-2 mark in the CCIW. Augustana finished third in the regular season and also third in the conference tournament.

Dana Goggin ended the year with a 16-2 overall record and was a perfect 7-0 in the CCIW while playing at No. 2 singles. She won the CCIW title at number two singles with a 5-7; 7-6; 6-3 win over Max Mella of Carthage in the championship match.

During her career she has posted a record of 31-13 in singles.

Lauren Goggin was 15-4 at No. 1 singles and was 6-1 in CCIW action. At the conference tournament she placed fourth in singles. In less than two years at Augustana she has compiled a record of 32-14. Lauren and Dana Goggin placed third at No. 1 doubles in the CCIW tournament with a 16-5 record. They have a collegiate record of 31-16 as doubles partners.

Women's golf

Bradley freshman Ally Scaccia (Prospect) posted a 1-over 73 and was tied for 24th at 229 as she missed a top 20 finish by 2 shots in the 37th annual Pat Bradley Invitational.

Bradley carded its second-lowest round of the fall with a nine-over 297 to jump from ninth into sixth (917 for 54 holes) in the final team standings at the par-72 Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.

Braves junior Allison Walsh (Prospect) wrapped up her strongest outing of the fall with a final-round 78. Walsh tied for 31st at 231.

Rugby

The Arlington Stallions' annual Information/Recruiting Social for the 2015 Spring/Summer season is planned for Saturday, Nov. 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rocky Vanders Restaurant (698 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Prospect Heights).

Interested prospective players and family members can meet and ask questions of the coaching staff and current members.

No previous experience in rugby is necessary to have a positive experience according to coach Paul Bergman,

"Every year we have players come to us for the first time and have great seasons," said coach Paul Bergman "One of those first year players, Alex Matasareneau (Prospect) had this to say of his year with the Stallions: 'The only regret I have is not starting rugby at an earlier time.' "

The Stallions just completed the most successful period of their ten-year history.

The club's middle school side was the 2013 state champion and the high school side in 2014 was rated No. 42 in the USA, placing fourth in the Illinois 15's championship and first in the 7's championship.

Multiple Stallions played on the Illinois All-State team and junior Spencer Krueger (Hersey) earned an invitation into the USA Rugby HS all-American program.

Boys basketball

Tryouts at Maine West High School for the Maine West Boys Feeder Basketball program will be Sunday, Nov. 30 and Sunday, Dec. 7.

Sixth graders will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. (fifth graders also are allowed to try out). Seventh graders from 1:35 p.m. to 3:05 p.m. and eighth graders from 3:10 p.m. to 4:40 p.m.
