Grand finale at Lewis for Vernon Hills' Choi

Amy Choi is going out in style in her fifth year on the Lewis University women's volleyball team.

The former Vernon Hills standout, who redshirted in 2013, has been named to the 2014 Women's Volleyball Capital One Academic All-District 4 Team.

Choi graduated with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a minor in computer science last year with a 3.90 GPA. She is currently pursuing her graduate degree in information security.

"Amy is a once-in-a-lifetime player for a coach to have," Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said on the school's website. "She is hard-working, focused, fun and determined to succeed in every aspect. To be honored for both academics and athletics at such a high level is amazing. We are all really proud of Amy and lucky to have her as a Flyer."

Choi became the first Flyer to record 2,000 digs in a career earlier this season.

She is averaging 5.48 digs per set this season. She has four matches this season with 30 or more digs, including a 31-dig contest in a four-set win for the Flyers at UW-Parkside. She has helped the Flyers to a 21-6 record this year.

Choi now is under consideration for Academic All-America consideration. Those awards will be announced at a later date.

• Rhode lsland sophomore Layne Self (Lake Zurich) enjoyed one of her finest matches of the season when she hit a blistering .714 against LaSalle in a 3-0 victory.

She finished with 10 kills and no errors on 14 swings while also adding a match-high 4 block assists.

Self has 102 blocks this season, becoming the seventh Ram to have at least two seasons with 100 or more blocks. She needs just seven more block assists to tie for 10th place in program history.

Men's swimming

Lewis sophomore Bryan Wiener (Mundelein) was part of the Flyers' 200 medley relay team whose time of 1:36.41 earned first place in a dual meet with Division I Valparaiso at the Lewis pool.

Men's soccer

Goalkeeper Jack Rubin (Stevenson), who played two years of high school soccer sticking strictly with club, was named Atlantic Sun Conference defensive player of the week last week. He earned the honor after making 5 saves in a 2-0 win over Jacksonville that clinched a spot for his team, the University of South Carolina Upstate, in the upcoming A-Sun tournament. The shutout was Rubin's second of the season and Upstate's third. Rubin originally started his career at DePaul then transferred to Upstate.

Women's soccer

Goalkeeper Kat Dickson (Grayslake Central) helped the Hope College women's soccer team win the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association outright by defeating Kalamazoo 2-1. The last time Hope team won a conference title outright was in 2004.

Dickson posted her ninth shutout of the season as the Flying Dutch wrapped up the regular season with a 2-0 win against visiting Calvin on senior night.

• Illinois State freshman Kelli Zickert (Buffalo Grove) was named the Missouri Valley Conference's freshman of the year.

Although she started only six games this year, Zickert scored 5 and added 3 assists for a total of 13 points. She tied for third in goals scored for a high-powered Redbirds attack that netted 17 more tallies than the next closest Valley team.

• DePaul freshman forward Alexa Ben (Schaumburg) was voted Big east Rookie of the Year by the league's coaches.

She was also chosen for the all-BigEast second team and the league's All-Rookie Team.

Ben finished her first regular season of collegiate soccer ranked second in the Big East with 28 points, including 16 in conference play, while her six goals against league foes also listed runner-up. The freshman recorded at least one point in 14 of 18 games this season and enters the postseason on a five-game scoring streak.

Women's tennis

Augustana sophomores Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove) and Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove) were named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin first team.

It was a repeat selection for the Goggin twins on the CCIW all-conference team. Lauren was also a first team selection in 2013 while Dana was a second team pick a year ago.

Both were instrumental in helping the Vikings of head coach Jon Miedema finish the fall portion of the 2014-15 campaign with a 12-2 dual meet record and a 5-2 mark in the CCIW. Augustana finished third in the regular season and also third in the conference tournament.

Dana Goggin ended the year with a 16-2 overall record and was a perfect 7-0 in the CCIW while playing at No. 2 singles. She won the CCIW title at number two singles with a 5-7; 7-6; 6-3 win over Max Mella of Carthage in the championship match.

During her career she has posted a record of 31-13 in singles.

Lauren Goggin was 15-4 at No. 1 singles and was 6-1 in CCIW action. At the conference tournament she placed fourth in singles. In less than two years at Augustana she has compiled a record of 32-14. Lauren and Dana Goggin placed third at No. 1 doubles in the CCIW tournament with a 16-5 record. They have a collegiate record of 31-16 as doubles partners.
