Phil Crane, the former longtime suburban congressman and Republican icon who once ran for president, died yesterday. Crane was 84 and had been battling lung cancer. The longtime Wauconda resident departed Congress after the 2004 election as its longest-serving Republican member. Full story.

Unseasonably cold temps to sweep through suburbs Tuesday

Enjoy today's mild weather while you can. The National Weather Service has predicted unseasonably cold temperatures throughout the Chicago area for the rest of the week. According to the Weather Service's Chicago office, a cold front will sweep across the region tomorrow and bring cold temperatures through the remainder of the week and into the weekend. Full story.

Trial date set in 2013 murder of Elgin artist

A man facing life in prison on charges he broke into an Elgin townhouse and killed a woman who just moved from Chicago is scheduled to face trial Jan. 26. Paul. A. Johnson, a 35-year-old lifelong Elgin resident who was on parole at the time of the slaying, is accused of fatally stabbing Lisa Koziol-Ellis with a screwdriver as he burglarized her townhouse in the Garden Quarter development on the city's near west side. Cops comparing notes after burglaries in Aurora, Oak Brook

Several area police departments are working together to probe a string of burglaries in which intruders are using vehicles to smash into stores and escape with high-end merchandise. The most recent occurred early Tuesday morning when burglars drove a minivan into the Salvatore Ferragamo store at the Chicago Premium Outlets Mall in Aurora and escaped with more than $40,000 in purses and luggage, authorities said. South suburban man sought in Round Lake Beach slaying

Lake County authorities obtained a $3 million arrest warrant yesterday for a South suburban man charged in the slaying of a 31-year-old man shot to death Saturday night in Round Lake Beach. Police say suspect Jeremy Anderson, 36, of Chicago Heights, should be considered armed and dangerous. He was last seen driving a blue, four-door Chevy Malibu with the Illinois license plate of V128881. Anderson is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, police said Sunday. Full story.

Suspect arrested in Beach Park hit-and-run that injured skateboarder

Lake County Sheriff's police say they've caught the driver in a hit-and-run crash Saturday night that injured a teenager skateboarding in Beach Park. Authorities said investigators responding to an anonymous tip located what they believe to be the vehicle on the 10000 block of Beach Road in Beach Park, as well as the suspect's girlfriend. Elgin man shot in hand on way to party

A 24-year-old Elgin man was shot early yesterday morning while getting out of his vehicle on the way to a party, police said. Elgin police said they responded to the 300 block of Jewett Street at approximately 12:43 a.m. after a report of several shots fired in the area. After arriving, officers learned that the man had been struck in the hand. Full story.

Defensemen lead the way in big Blackhawks win

With rookie defenseman Trevor Van Riemsdyk starring along side a two-time Norris Trophy winner for the first time in his 15-game NHL career, the Blackhawks defeated San Jose 5-2 yesterday, snapping a three-game, home-ice losing streak in which they scored just a pair of goals. Full story.
