North Barrington attorney charged with home invasion, firing gun in Hawthorn Woods

An attorney from North Barrington remains held in the Lake County jail on charges he broke into a Hawthorn Woods residence Friday night and fired a handgun, authorities said.

Raymond Clutts, 57, of the 100 block of Clubhouse Drive, faces charges of home invasion and felony reckless discharge of a weapon stemming from his arrest at 6:50 p.m. Friday, Hawthorn Woods Police Chief Jennifer Paulus said.

Police said an officer fired one shot outside the home before Clutts was taken into custody, but no one was injured.

He remains in jail on $1.5 million bail, court records show, of which he must post 10 percent in order to be released.

Paulus said no one was injured when the gun was fired inside the home. The number of shots fired remains under investigation, she said.

Attempts to reach someone at Clutts' Schaumburg law offices were unsuccessful Monday.

Paulus said police were called to the home in the 0-100 block of Barberry Court by someone who heard gunshots. Officers arrived just as Clutts was leaving the residence, Paulus said.

She said that after Clutts disobeyed officer commands, an officer discharged a weapon outside the home, and Clutts was arrested.

Paulus said she could not discuss additional details about the shooting because it remains under investigation by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. In addition to home invasion and reckless discharge, Clutts is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, resisting a peace officer, and criminal trespass to a residence. If found guilty of the most serious charge he could be sentenced up to 30 years in prison.

Clutts is due back in court Thursday for status of attorney.
