Chicago crews planted 6,600 trees in 2014
City crews planted more than 6,600 trees throughout Chicago in 2014.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office says the total exceeds what officials originally expected to plant by 300.
In a statement, Emanuel says the plantings will help maintain the "urban canopy's vibrancy for generations to come." Officials estimate the city has 3.5 million trees.
The mayor's office says the plantings help the environment as well as increase property values. The office also says that next year the plan is to plant more trees. It explains the city's budget next year will allow the planting about 7,800 trees.
