Neighborhood spotlight focuses on Foxdale in Addison

When Deborah and Robert Spidale moved from the east side of Addison to Foxdale on the west side of town, the new subdivision appealed to them because everything was new, even the streets and sidewalks.

"We needed a bigger home, but wanted to stay in Addison because the children were established in school and had a lot of friends here," Deborah Spidale said.

"We loved the house - a Georgian with four bedrooms upstairs. We have three kids, and it was the first time they (each) had a bedroom of their own.

"At that time, almost everyone moving in had young kids, just as we did. They grew up together and went to school together. We were all putting up our fences and pools. It was fantastic. Our original neighbors are still our best friends.

"We live near the expressways, but we don't hear any traffic at all," Spidale said. "We're one light away, so it's such easy access to everything. We all get on the expressway everyday and go in different directions."

The couple liked the great location near the entertainment corridor and Centennial Park, where the Addison Park District's Centennial Rec Center offers state-of-the-art equipment and health club facilities. They also live close to Foxdale Park in the neighborhood, and their kids grew up playing at the park and playing in the sports leagues.

Foxdale is situated in the village's northwest area off Lake Street, which is the village's primary commercial artery, lined from one edge of the village to the other with stores, restaurants and services.

When the neighborhood, once farmland, was first built 28 years ago, there was still a lot of open space with cornfields behind and alongside the homes, and a silo stood on the corner now occupied by Jewel-Osco.

Built in two phases, Foxdale initially featured three or four different models. The second construction phase included a variety of homes along with some larger custom homes, so there's a lot of housing variety in the neighborhood, said Sharon Scianna, broker associate with Century 21 Lullo in Addison.

"They're not the real big homes, and not the small homes, but nice, midsize split level and two stories - and within the mid-price range - with winding streets and big mature trees now," Scianna said. "There's a real nice neighborhood park there, and the schools are very good."

Foxdale's main attraction is its great location close to the entertainment corridor in Addison and major expressways, 20 minutes from O'Hare International Airport and 25 minutes from downtown Chicago, Scianna said.

"You can't beat the location. If I had to give one reason for Foxdale's attraction, I'd say it was its location close to all the expressways."

Area amenities include Addison Park District's Links & Tees outdoor golf facility and indoor golf dome, and another fitness center and family aquatic center at Community Park. Golfers also have access to at least a dozen other area golf courses.

Community Park is also home to one of the largest senior citizen clubs in the West suburbs with weekly meetings and many activities and events.

The Centennial Rec Center hosts many recreational programs and activities. For more recreation, residents can enjoy hundreds of acres of DuPage County forest preserves.

Addison is home to the fourth largest industrial park in the state. Scianna said it's a great place to live, work and raise a family.

The Foxdale neighborhood was built in two phases, providing a variety of housing styles. These homes are on Foxdale Drive.
