Indoor farmers market coming to Lombard church

The date of the farmers market was incorrect in an earlier version of this article. The market is scheduled to take place this Sunday, Nov. 9.

Shoppers looking for fresh, organic, locally grown food or edible holiday gifts can find a variety of offerings at a new, one-day farmers market Sunday in Lombard.

The market, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is being sponsored by Calvary Episcopal Church, Prairie Food Co-op and an organization called Faith in Place, which connects religious people of various faiths with their shared interest in environmental issues.

Rev. Emily Mellott said attendees can expect to find meat, baked goods, salsas, soups, honey and winter produce in the parish hall of the church, 105 W. Maple St.

"The idea came to us from a couple who are members of congregation," she said. "It's a great way for the church to share the excitement of all God's creation with our neighbors and friends."

Mellott said the church decided to try the market as a one-day event this year, but depending on its success, it may be become an annual event with more dates.

Faith in Place sponsors several indoor farmers markets at places of worship throughout the Chicago area during the winter. The Lombard market will be the first of the season.

Markets also will take place Feb. 7 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights and March 15 at Countryside Church Unitarian Universalist in Palatine.

Admission is free and vendors will generally be equipped to take Link cards and credit, Mellott said.

The Prairie Food Co-op is in the process of opening a community-owned grocery store in the area that will include well-labeled local, organic and sustainable food. Mellott said they were "a natural partner" because they had connections to several of the vendors.

"It should be a lot of fun, especially in the afternoon, as we have live music in the church to enjoy and lots of vendors to shop among," she said.

Vendors include Spark of the Heart, Presto Pesto, Urban Canopy, Hasselmann Family Farm, Vintage Candy Apples and more.
