The bare brown room

We are a family of five. We have 16-year-old triplet boys. College is in the near future and, let's face it, feeding three teenage boys is costly enough. My husband and I both work full time and I have another part-time job. Furniture and room updates are just not in the cards right now. This is the room we have guests sit in and I just find it depressing. There is no color. I would love paintings, colored items etc, but it's just not on the list of things to buy for the family. All the furniture is hand-me-downs. My LIVING room needs to be revived.

The brown room has a great amount of light and is a blank slate to work with. To help her keep up with her boys, we'll need to use durable fabric, bring in some color and pattern with draperies, pillows and an ottoman.

• Window treatments would be the first way to introduce softness into the space. We just recommend standing panels to flank the windows since she already has vertical blinds. A great way to bring in color and won't be affected by use!

• We would recommend either replacing or recovering the sectional and adding a fabric covered ottoman or two small ottomans that can be used in different ways with a neutral high performance fabric.

Using separate pieces would give us more options with furniture arrangement.

• The brown room definitely needs some storage pieces. By adding some wood pieces, even a game table in the corner would be a great place for family activities or homework.

With the addition of patterned pillows, artwork, an area rug and even a wall of family photos a warm, useful, family-oriented space could be created!

Fabric-covered ottomans could be put to varying uses in the reader's room.
Solid panels to flank the windows would combine with patterned pillows and an area rug to create a warm, fun family-oriented space.
