It's Election Day, and while a record number of people have voted already, today is the day polls open statewide for you to make your picks in a number of important contests. Trial experts dispute cause of newborn's death

The jury will resume deliberating this morning in the case of Jessica Cruz, who is accused of killing her newborn baby in the restroom of a Streamwood Salvation Army almost three years ago. Jurors are considering whether the baby was born dead or alive; they deliberating all last night. Full story.

No bail for Bolingbrook man in terror support case

A federal judge denied bail yesterday for a 19-year-old Bolingbrook man who attempted to fly to Turkey with his two siblings to join the Islamic State group. Mohammed Hamzah Khan is considered a flight risk and a danger to his community after attempting to board a plane to Austria with his 17-year-old sister and 16-year-old brother. Waukegan man shot, killed by police in Highland Park hospital ER

A Waukegan man armed with a handgun was shot and killed by police officers inside Northshore Highland Park Hospital early yesterday. Christopher M. Anderson, 27, pulled out the gun after being aggressive with hospital staff members. Full story.

Bolingbrook soccer coach charged with solicitation

A Bolingbrook soccer coach is facing indecent solicitation and grooming charges after being accused of having text conversations of a sexual nature with someone he believed to be a minor. Full story.

Probation, fine for Elgin woman who starved dog to death

A 24-year-old Elgin woman accused of starving her pet dogs on her apartment balcony for a week while she was out of town was sentenced yesterday to 18 months probation and a $2,000 fine. Tyquence M. Jude, of the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive, was charged with felony animal cruelty after authorities found one dog starved to death. Full story.

Cook of the Week challenge winner: Jamie Andrade

An Elk Grove Village woman took home this year's Daily Herald Cook of the Week Challenge finale last night at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Schaumburg. About 500 Daily Herald readers and foodies attended the event, which included cooking demonstrations and food and wine samples. Full story.

Cubs welcome Maddon as new manager

The Cubs new manager Joe Maddon used all the right words yesterday at a news conference: playoffs, World Series, wins. The Cubs made things official with a formal naming of Maddon as the franchise's 54th manager and signing him to a five-year contract worth a reported $25 million. Full story.
