One shot, two beaten with bricks in Carpentersville gang fight

One man was shot and two people beaten with landscaping bricks Sunday morning after two groups of rival gang members brawled in Carpentersville, according to police.

Alfredo A. Sanchez, 31, of the 1700 block of Papoose Road, Carpentersville, was one of three people charged as a result of the fight, which occurred on the front lawn of a home on the 1700 block of Papoose after two groups of gang members gathered on homes directly across the street from each other, Police Cmdr. Timothy Bosshart said.

Sanchez was charged with attempted murder, a felony that carries up to 30 years in prison if convicted, as well as two counts of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, according to Bosshart and Kane County court records.

Sanchez' bail was set at $1 million Tuesday, meaning he must post $100,000 to be released.

Bosshart said police were called at about 1:40 a.m. and officers were not sure what started the fight, but they brought between 20 and 24 people to the station to sort out the situation.

"They weren't all fighting but it was a large group that was fighting," Bosshart said.

Sanchez is accused of shooting a 43-year-old Crystal Lake man "multiple times," Bosshart said. He could not specify exactly how many times, but added the man's injuries were not life-threatening and he was take to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin for treatment.

Two men - a 43-year-old also of Crystal Lake and a 41-year-old Carpentersville resident of the 1700 block of Papoose - were each hit in the head with landscape bricks, Bosshart said.

Jesus Simental, 22, of the 0-99 block of Birch Street, Carpentersville, was charged with aggravated battery in a public place and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to court records.

Simental's bail was set at $50,000 and he must post $5,000 to be released while the case is pending. He faces anywhere from probation to five years in prison if convicted.

The man Simmental is accused of beating, the 43-year-old from Crystal Lake, was initially taken to Sherman Hospital and later transferred to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and is expected to recover, Bosshart said.

The 41-year-old who was hit on the head was treated and released. No one has been charged with attacking him, Bosshart said.

"Nobody saw him get hit, including himself," Bosshart said. "It's still a pending investigation."

A third person, Adrian Renteria, 27, of the 100 block of Meadowdale Court, Carpentersville, was charged with felony cocaine possession and faces anywhere from probation to three years in prison if convicted. His bail information was not immediately available Tuesday.

All three men are due in court Nov. 14.
