Kifowit retains 84th House seat

Voters in the 84th state House District have chosen to retain incumbent Democrat Stephanie Kifowit, who won re-election Tuesday against Republican Krishna Bansal by claiming 58 percent of the vote to Bansal's 42 percent, according to unofficial election results with all 65 precincts reporting.

Kifowit, 42, of Oswego, said her re-election will allow her more time to focus on her priorities of addressing high property taxes, improving the state's budget, and providing more resources for veterans.

"We need to find property tax relief," Kifowit said Tuesday. "Really we need to start aggressively looking at a solution for the property taxes, which are just too high."

As a Marine Corps veteran, Kifowit is a member of the Illinois Veterans Suicide Task Force, and she said she's excited to continue her work to provide veterans "the help that they deserve." She said she also expects school funding to be a major topic as she returns to Springfield for her second term.

Kifowit took over the 84th District seat after beating Republican Pat Fee in 2012. She has been representing parts of Aurora, Naperville, Montgomery, Oswego and Boulder Hill and will continue to do so after defeating Bansal, a Naperville businessman.
