Martin defeats Hanna in Kane Board 11

Voters chose John Martin to be the new voice representing Kane County Board District 11 Tuesday night. The vote may have also served a dual purpose as a de facto referendum on the concept plan for redevelopment of the old Settler's Hill landfill.

Martin, a Republican, campaigned on being incumbent Mike Donahue's hand-picked successor while emphasizing his own independent voice. Democrat Martha Hanna positioned herself as the candidate favoring a more passive use of both the Settler's Hill landfill and other forest preserve district sites. She favored honeybee hives and native plantings over the current plan for a cross country facility at the old landfill.

Unofficial vote totals showed Martin defeating Hanna by 2,410 votes with all 18 precincts reporting Tuesday night. Martin thanked all his supporters and said he's looking forward to getting integrated into the board as soon as he takes office. He plans on being a loud and consistent voice on the future redevelopment of Settler's Hill.

"I do want to be supportive of that," Martin said. "Mike has had a wonderful run with that project. I hope I can keep it moving forward."
