Attic fire leaves Carol Stream home uninhabitable

A fire contained to the attic of a split-level house in Carol Stream early Saturday evening displaced the homeowners and caused major roof damage, authorities said.

Upon arrival, firefighters found flames shooting from the roof of the home on the 500 block of Chippewa Trail about 5:30 p.m., and it took about 30 to 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze, Carol Stream Fire Lt. Richard Davis said.

"It was hard to get to," said Davis, adding that crews fought the fire from underneath the home's rafters.

By 7:30 p.m., investigators remained at the house to determine what started the fire.

There were no injuries, but the smoke and water damage left the home uninhabitable, Davis said. The department's chaplain was called to help the residents arrange temporary housing.

Damage estimates were not immediately available. Units from Glendale Heights, Hanover Park and Wheaton fire departments also assisted Carol Stream.
