Joey's Angels Eclipses $2 Million Mark in Search for a Cure

It's one thing to help find a cure for leukemia after losing a son to the disease. It's amazing when the fundraising associated that fight crosses the $2 million dollar mark, which is exactly what the Mix Family of Buffalo Grove, Ill. has done for the Leukemia Research Foundation (LRF).

Larry and Patty Mix lost their son Joey to leukemia in 1996, after a three-month fight against the disease. Soon after, the family decided to raise money in Joey's honor and memory. The family established the Joey's Angels Chapter of the LRF, named after Joey's favorite movie Angels in the Outfield. The movie title also inspired the name of the Chapter's signature event, the Angels in the Fairway Golf Outing.

Angels in the Fairway quickly became one of the top charity golf events in the Midwest, filling two golf courses with a morning and afternoon round of golf and hosting a post-golf dinner and fundraiser for hundreds in the evening. Angels in the Fairway had a 14-year run during which the Chapter raised the bulk of its $2 million. The Joey's Angels Chapter took a break from organizing its golf outing after the 2010 event, but never stopped raising money for the LRF. The Chapter hosted several events during the winter and other fundraising events and letter campaigns to keep the fight going. The Joey's Angels Chapter has attracted players to the Bob Chinn's Charity Golf Outing to keep its golfer base engaged and supporting the LRF, which has been the beneficiary of the Bob Chinn's event for several years.

"The Mix family is truly exceptional," said Kevin Radelet, Executive Director of the LRF.

"After suffering unspeakable loss they gathered their friends, family and supporters to fund research in search for a cure so that others don't have to experience what they, themselves endured. Larry's employer F.H. Paschen and their contractors have been so instrumental in this enormous success that has funded 20 important research projects around the world. We can't thank them enough for their incredible dedication and commitment to finding an end to all blood cancers," Radelet said.
