Former Lake County jail officers indicted over homeless man's death

Two former Lake County corrections officers were indicted yesterday by a Lake County grand jury for official misconduct, authorities said. The indictment against Rodney Holmes and Robert Schlesser centers on an incident in 2011 when a homeless man named Eugene Gruber was arrested by sheriff's deputies. Undersheriff Raymond J. Rose has previously said Gruber fought with the jail guards and one put Gruber in a takedown hold to restrain him. Full story.

Attorney concerned with safety of woman who slashed daughter's throat

Attorneys for a woman who slashed her 4-year-old daughter's throat in 2010 in Bloomingdale say the woman is now lucid and being mistreated at the secure mental health facility where she is committed. Marci Webber, 47, of East Nassau, New York, is serving a maximum 100-year commitment at Elgin Mental Health Center after being found not guilty of the November 2010 slaying of her daughter, Maggie, by reason of insanity after a 2012 bench trial. Elgin man charged with murder

An 18-year-old Elgin man was charged with murder after police said he stabbed a man who died of his injuries yesterday. William Donald, of the 600 block of Alice Place, was being held on $5 million bail in Kane County jail after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Full story.

Durbin, Oberweis see red over environmental issues

It was jab, left hook, eye roll, but no knockout punch as U.S. Senate candidates Dick Durbin, the Democratic incumbent, and Republican state Sen. Jim Oberweis sparred last night in the last major debate of their campaign. The two traded barbs over some recurring themes but broke new ground on environmental questions during the forum held by WTTW 11 Chicago, such as drilling for natural gas in Lake Michigan. Algonquin police chief to retire in December

Algonquin Police Chief Russell Laine intends to retire in December after serving in the position for more than 25 years. Laine, who has been in law enforcement since 1976, has been Algonquin's chief of police since 1985. He also was previously the chief of police in Bartlett and in Edgerton, Wisconsin. Full story.
