Chicago adds 2 electric buses with federal grant

Chicago has added two electric buses to its public transportation fleet with a $2.5 million federal grant.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Chicago Transit Authority unveiled the buses Wednesday. Each bus cost about $1 million, compared to roughly $400,000 that most CTA buses cost.

Each bus is expected to save $25,000 worth of fuel annually. That's $300,000 over a 12-year lifespan.

Officials say a decision to buy additional electric buses would depend of factors including bus performance in extreme weather.

The CTA says about 300 of the city's 1,800 buses are hybrid and hundreds of others are being upgraded to increase fuel efficiency.

The buses started operating Wednesday and are being rotated through six city routes.
