"Get Your Rear in Gear-Elgin" helps fund colon cancer screenings, education

Elgin, Ill. - The Colon Cancer Coalition recently awarded the Advocate Charitable Foundation at Advocate Sherman Hospital with $25,000 from funds raised during the "Get Your Rear in Gear - Elgin" race held in August.

Inspired by the treatment she received at Sherman Hospital's Cancer Care Center, colon cancer survivor Sharon Wells and her husband Devin Wells established the local race to raise awareness and funds for colon cancer education and screenings.

More than 200 race participants and local sponsors raised more than $25,000 during the event.

The money will go toward colon cancer screenings at Sherman Hospital and education for the local at-risk population.

Sharon and Devin Wells presented the $25,000 check to Sherman Hospital administrators on Wednesday.
